  • Project Proposal

    HEAL Project Proposal

Project Title: HEAL (Health Education Awareness for Life)

    1. Project Overview

The HEAL Project is a community-based health initiative aimed at addressing pressing health, hygiene, and wellness needs in the Diepsloot community, with a particular focus on SayPro participants. Rooted in data gathered through a comprehensive needs assessment, HEAL promotes health education, access to care, emergency preparedness, and menstrual hygiene through four targeted events. The project is intended to empower youth and community members by providing essential knowledge, practical skills, and tangible resources.

    2. Needs Assessment and Justification

A community needs assessment conducted through interviews, focus groups, and direct observation revealed the following:

A lack of awareness and education about sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Insufficient support and services related to gender-based violence (GBV).

Youth unprepared to handle medical emergencies due to a lack of first aid training.

Widespread menstrual hygiene challenges, with limited access to sanitary pads causing school absenteeism and health risks.

These gaps necessitate the HEAL initiative, which addresses each area with dedicated programming and community involvement.

    3. Core Events

    Event 1: Health Education
    Event 2: Health Care Wellness

    Event 3: First Aid Training

    Event 4: Pads Drive

    4. Community Benefits

Empowered youth and residents through knowledge and skills.

Reduced stigma around STIs, GBV, and menstruation.

    Improved school attendance for girls.

Stronger collaboration between SayPro, health promoters, and clinics.

A healthier, more informed, and resilient community.

  • Group proposal

    Report:
    Date: 25 April 2025
    Group proposal
Report compiled by the student social worker: Obakeng Mahwai.
Name of the group: “Life After Matric” Group
Type of a group: Therapeutic group.
A therapy group is defined as a group where the group members meet to address the common challenges that they encounter, they can be emotional, psychological or social challenges (Toseland and Tivas, 2015). The group members in a therapy group share their experiences, feelings and coping strategies in a safe environment that is provided for them. The group members are able to relate to one another which helps in understanding and supporting each other, and also having a sense of community amongst themselves.
The Life After Matric group is a structured, therapeutic group work programme designed to support post-matric youth as they transition into adulthood. The group specifically focuses on young individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, and uncertainty related to their future after completing matric. Guided by the theory of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the programme empowers participants to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and equips them with practical coping strategies. The group runs over six sessions, each tailored to address key developmental and emotional challenges faced during this transitional period.
Interactive activities, purposeful icebreakers, guided reflections, and custom worksheets are used throughout to facilitate self-awareness, peer connection, and personal growth. The ultimate goal is to foster confidence, emotional well-being, and a clearer sense of direction for life after matric.
    South African Statistics
The prevalence of these issues is reflected in South African statistics. Over 60% of young people aged 15 to 24 are unemployed, according to Nkonki (2025). Additionally, a UNICEF survey (cited in Nkonki, 2025) found that 60% of South African youth 70% of whom are between the ages of 15 and 24 need mental health care services.

  • Report on individual sessions

Individual Sessions with Clients: An overview Report
Sessions conducted by the student social worker: Obakeng Mahwai

    Session Objectives

The sessions had two primary objectives:

    1. To get to know the clients and be aware of their situations: Understanding each client’s unique circumstances, challenges, and needs was essential for effective support.
    2. To build a working relationship (rapport) with the clients: Establishing a positive and empathetic relationship with clients was crucial for promoting participation and engagement.

    Participation and Engagement

Out of the seven clients, six actively participated in the sessions, demonstrating engagement and willingness to work together. One client, however, was reluctant to participate and only attended one session, showing hesitation to open up. This highlights the importance of flexibility and adaptability in approach when working with clients.

    Challenges Faced by Clients

The clients faced various challenges, including social and emotional difficulties. Some clients struggled with grief, anxiety, and attachment issues, while others faced challenges related to identity and self-expression. Understanding each client’s unique situation was essential for providing effective support.

    Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT)
    Person-Centered Therapy
    Grief Therapy
    Grief therapy
    Attachment Theory
    Attachment Theory
    Erikson’s Stages of Life

    Progress Made by Clients

The clients demonstrated notable progress from the first session to the second, particularly in terms of increased openness and engagement. As the sessions progressed, clients began to share more freely about their experiences and emotions, indicating a growing sense of trust and comfort with the therapeutic process.

Some specific areas of progress include:

    – Increased ability to articulate and express emotions: Clients became more confident in expressing their feelings.
